Clever octopus steals from Florida fishermen's trap

Dec. 7 (UPI) — A group of shocked fishermen in the Florida Keys captured video of a clever octopus using their live trap as its own personal buffet.

The video, filmed Sunday in Key West, shows the octopus perched atop a live trap filled with fish after it was pulled to dry ground by the fishermen.

The octopus uses its tentacles to reach down through the trap and take its fill of fish.

“When pulling up our pinfish trap to show our friends the live bait we were using for fishing we had noticed an unusual sight,” the filmer wrote. “An octopus had found our live trap and was doing some fishing of its own. The clever octopus had attached itself to the top of the trap and used his long tentacles as fishing lines. The octopus would extend his tentacles and swipe several fishes at a time and slowly reel them up.”

The man said they decided to put the trap back into the water with the octopus still perched on top.

“I thought it would be rude to interrupt his dinner!” he wrote.
